It's based on the principle that oil & water doesn't mix. On the stone or metal plate lithography ink will be slightly raised on the surface. It's then pressed onto the medium surface.

Each lithograph is numbered & signed by the artist. Despite the differences in producing lithographs vs prints, the finished product from both can yield results that appear similar.
